Virtual production (VP) is an emerging method of film production that uses a combination of technologies ranging from the use of LED screens, real-time game engines, AI, 5G, cloud rendering and edge computing to combine live-action footage and computer graphics in real-time.
Put in more specific terms a merger between live photo-realistic set rendering using Unreal engine (with a refreshment rate of 100fps) and live studio stage set that places the actors in environments otherwise difficult to create. Similar to rear projection as method only light years ahead, it still has the novelty factor attached to it, with added countless digital options according to how much rendering power you can afford (at a cost) – including live streaming. Interesting to note steady-cam is linked with the 3d cam environment and the angles are consistent and easier to pre-visualise. Set design for Unreal engines is the next big thing as well developing the know-how to balance the lighting and grading of the VP set and real set so they match. Like with real projection that now we easily spot, or choose to ignore, you wander if the human mind will clue itself up and spot the inconsistencies in due course – for instance where the real set ends and the VP set starts.
