Just opposite Young Vic but not in its shadow, Calder’s is the soul child of book publisher that rebelled with success against censorship (that apparently doesn’t exist in a democracy as old as England). Today Calder’s is 3 exquisite things in one …. a cheap rehearsal space for small productions considering its location and how inaccessible Young Vic is for the same thing, a small theatre in its own right that you can also hire and a good bookshop specialising in stage and performance literature that is not sales or agenda driven.

Calder’s is both a very inspiring and a much needed theatre place that one hopes will survive forever. The evident difference can be seen between the positive legacy of a 60 intellectual and that of ‘cultural managers with an agenda’ of today, that run fat establishments like Young Vic, but offer fewer and fewer opportunities to make theatre freely.
